Fancy Summer Enrichment Programs July 26, 2013 Bev Taylor, Founder of Ivy Coach, has let it be known where she stands on summer enrichment programs. She is completely against them. If youre a regular reader of our college admissions blog, you know that we at Ivy Coach stand firmly against fancy summer enrichment programs. So many parents believe that these fancy summer enrichment programs will help improve their childs odds of getting into a highly selective college. These parents couldnt be more off base. What these enrichment programs on a college application say to college admissions counselors is that mommy and daddy can afford to send their child to one of these such programs. It shows a lack of personal initiative on the part of the student (these programs are not that dissimilar, in our opinion, to sleep-a-way camp or a teen tour). And for college admissions counselors who make only around four times as much as the cost of these programs for an individual student (often not even), theyre not exactly going to go to bat for them if theyre a borderline candidate. After all, college admissions counselors are real people with real human emotions! Our Founder, Bev Taylor, has let the world know in the press that these  enrichment programs arent as good as people think that they are. They are certainly a cash cow for universities but they are not a ticket to getting in. They will not give an applicant a leg up in admissions. They just wont in spite of what so many think. These people are just plain wrong with a capital W. There are so many other great things a student can do over the summer months to show initiative, to demonstrate their passion, and to make a difference. So many folks believe getting a job will hurt your chances for admission because instead of a job, students could be attending fancy summer enrichment programs. No! Getting a job is much, much better. Its a genuine life experience, not a manufactured one. Colleges dont like to see manufactured life experiences on applications. Do research, compete in your sport, make a difference in your community. Think globally, act locallyas the saying goes.

In order to analyze and understand a theory, one must approach it in a scientific manner by utilizing the five-step scientific method to outline the theory and all essential elements. The five-step (5) scientific method is as follows: (1) ask a question, (2) conduct research, (3) form a hypothesis, (4) test the hypothesis using experiments, and (5) draw a conclusion. The primary question that is asked in conflict theory is, who is causing the crime and what behaviors contribute to the crime in society? According to Reid (2012), â€Å"many of today’s scholars trace modern criminology conflict theory back to the social and economic upheavals of the 1960s† (p. 127). Over time, conflict theory has gain popularity among theorists, and each of those theorists has completed their own research pertaining to their hypothesis and conclusion. From reading the second set of readings there were a few topics that stood out the most to me. The topics include the role of the government in education and the economics of education. I was really surprised from the readings to find new information and to discover that there is not a lot of research conducted in the field of education. Most of the findings I agreed with the authors but some of the findings I’m in disagreement. The first point that I discovered from the readings that I was surprised about was the actual role the government has on providing funding for education. My surprise was that the federal government does not have that much control over the funding and decisions that are being made towards education. I was surprised that different states have so much power over providing funding. It said in the Ed.gov overview that 87.7 percent of the funds for elementary and secondary level education will come from the states. Also only 10.8 percent will come from the federal government. This was surprising to me but I have really not looked into where funding comes from for schools. Also this explains where there is so much variety in education between states. All of these issues started two centuries ago as the humans looked upon the beautiful green Earth and saw something else they could use for their own personal needs. They then stared upon their fossil fuel resources, they did need something to run the machines on. Inventors inventing, mass producing, and using these items become a norm among the many people within the land. Of course they also needed food too so they breed and mass produced those animals as well. BUT we need items to build our shelter to make these houses for the growing population and land to hold us and our animals, i’m sure a couple of trees is fine.
